Desc: La légende du Joseph: Directed by Philippe Lespinasse. The story begins in the 80s, in Bordeaux, when urban planning -the other name for cheap housing constructions in place of the working-class and working-class history of a district- had not yet raged too much. In particular, there were large fishing vessels in the "Bassins à Flots", which were leaving for long campaigns in Newfoundland. Until 1986, Zealand, Iceland and Commandant Gué unloaded the cod in Bordeaux. The dryers were in Bègles, «downwind» of Bordeaux. There were about thirty until the 1950s. The boats were sometimes armed in Brittany, in St Malo in particular, but there was never any cod drying in Brittany. There was a whole economy in Bacalan around port operations. Bars, fitters, hardware dealers.... After a break-up I had applied to board as a seaman. I had been taken. Unfortunately a moped accident the day before I left upset my project. I did not become a sailor, but thirty years later, I still boarded the last French factory ship, for a 45-day fishing in the storm. Except that in the test of fact, my dreams had to adapt. The story of fishermen and Newfoundlanders can no longer be told as it was in the 1950s, with glory and epic stories. Today, the fishery is fraught with questions we did not ask ourselves. How can we tell this without moralizing, keeping the right spirit of adventure? How can we tell the story of the convicts who go to sea for six to eight months to feed the land? The boat I left on, the Joseph Roty, a monster 95 meters long with 50 guys on board, is today the last French factory ship. He's about to retire. With these men whom I admire but who participate in a suicidal economy, I spent 45 days in the storm, in the intimacy of their lives, of their testimonies. 45 days with the last convicts of the sea
